The course at ACET is dynamic and wide-ranging in terms of its delivery and content. Our communicative approach to learning ensures progress through active participation and continuous language development. The course consists of authentic discussions on current affairs, a skills-based approach to grammar and vocabulary as well as writing and listening practice.

Our Military English students complete a Needs Analysis before starting the course, which enables teachers to assess their particular language requirements and to formulate a program tailored to the needs and priorities of each student.

Study for STANAG 6001 at Cork Language Centre International

What is STANAG 6001

STANAG 6001 is a test that measures general language proficiency of key military personnel being prepared to take part in peacekeeping missions in NATO-led operations. The test measures language skills according to NATO standardization document which defines criteria and levels. The acronym STANAG is an abbreviated form of STANDARDISATION AGREEMENT. This agreement encompasses all NATO-related areas from technology, equipment to training and language. The objective of STANAG is to provide for efficient cooperation between NATO member nations, and communication is an important element of the latter. STANAG specifies the following language skill levels: 

Level 0 – No practical proficiency

Level 1 – Elementary Corresponds to the “basic-level state language proficiency examination specialized in military language.

Level 2 – Fair (Limited working) Corresponds to the “intermediate-level state language proficiency examination specialized in military language”.

Level 3 – Good (Minimum professional) “Corresponds to the “advanced-level state language proficiency examination specialized in military language”.

Level 4 – Very good (Full professional) Corresponds to the “Proficiency” level of the English language proficiency examination system, with the only difference that Proficiency is a general exam, not specialized in military language. 

Level 5 – Excellent (Native / bilingual) Native or bilingual speaker
